CHARACTER TEMPLATES

Start from a drawn character and make it yours. Loading replaces every frame, the size and the palette; one Ctrl+Z puts it all back.

IMPORT PNG SHEET

Pick a PNG sprite sheet and its frame size. Frames are sliced left-to-right, top-to-bottom on a uniform grid. Pixels below 50% alpha become transparent; partial alpha is dropped.

GAMEMAKER SPRITE

Which sprite does this project overwrite? GameMaker keeps its own frame GUIDs, so the slot has to exist already and declare the same number of frames.

The point the game positions a sprite by — the feet, for someone walking. It is kept in the .forge file and handed to the loader at run time. It is never written into a PNG, so every engine reading a sheet has to be told it separately.

the two files

A .forge file is the whole project: every sprite, the one shared palette, the origins and the frame rates. It is JSON, and deliberately readable in a diff. A PNG sheet is only pixels — a uniform grid of frame-width by frame-height cells, counted left to right, then top to bottom.

one palette

Every sprite in a project draws from the same swatches, so a character's eight facings cannot drift onto eight slightly different browns. REPLACE and a theme both follow that palette across every sprite. The .forge key names at most 89 colours; go over and saving offers to merge the least-used into their nearest neighbours.

Both under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, whose text ships beside the faces in fonts/. Self-hosted rather than fetched, so the app looks the same offline.

colour themes

41 of the themes are vendored from MAGMA//OPS, where they dress the ops dashboard rather than a sprite. Any theme you save is yours and stays on this machine.

the sheet format

The uniform-grid PNG sheet is a shared contract, not this app's to change: adenosine, magnolia, texastoast and the GameMaker importer all read sprites the same way.
